Ghana Fights Malaria by Improving Sanitation
June 16th, 2009 | Posted by Lucy FloresZoomlion Ghana Limited and the Ghana Ministry of Health have teamed up to establish the Nationwide Mosquito Control Programme (NAMCOP), a mass mosquito spraying exercise that will cover all 17 districts in the Western Region of Ghana.
According to Zoomlion, a waste management company that works to improve sanitation throughout the country and fight malaria, a total of 420 “spraying gangs” will periodically spray mosquito breeding sites in order to stop the spread of malaria. These sites include public toilets, drains and ditches, stagnant water, market places, disposal sites and other locations containing water.
Zoomlion also aims to educate communities on sanitation issues and to engage young people in the cause. Their efforts have greatly improved waste issues in the region.
By highlighting the development of programs like this mosquito spraying exercise, we can educate the global community about the excellent progress being made to end malaria. But we still have a long way to go. Encourage your friends and family to contact their elected officials about getting involved with the fight against malaria, and we will continue to make those steps.
