President Obama visited Ghana this past week.  During a speech to Ghana’s Parliament, the President reaffirmed the United State’s commitment to fighting malaria and other pressing global health needs.

We will pursue the goal of ending deaths from malaria and tuberculosis, and eradicating polio. We will fight neglected tropical disease. And we won’t confront illnesses in isolation — we will invest in public health systems that promote wellness and focus on the health of mothers and children.”

Also, while in Accra, Ghana, President Obama visited a local hospital and highlighted the importance of improving maternal and child health in Africa.

From Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, the Malaria Policy Center Director, Mark Green agreed with the President and sees combating malaria as a key to improving maternal and child health.

“Malaria is integrally tied to maternal and child health in Africa making effective malaria control programs vital to helping health systems adequately care for mothers and children,” Green said during his week long visit to Tanzania to build new anti-malaria programs.

The Malaria Policy Center and Malaria No More recognize that lifting the malaria burden off of Africa will allow nations and health systems to provide improved care for their people, enhancing the care for pregnant women and children under five.
