Rains to Increase Malaria cases in Kenya
October 7th, 2009 | Posted by Ben BrophyAs a result of the much anticipated El-Nino rains, individuals in Kenya are bracing themselves for an upsurge in malaria cases. Stagnant pools of water, created by the rains, will provide breeding sites for mosquitoes.
Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death in Kenya, affecting mostly the young and the pregnant. Malaria kills 90 children a day under the age of five everyday, translating to 34,000 children a year. The Kenyan government has prioritized the control of malaria and has developed a national strategy to combat the disease.
$60 million worth of artemisinin combination therapy antimalarial drugs, as well as $800 million towards the construction of a new hospital, have been contributed by the Chinese government.
