Malaria Facts

Malaria is a disease of the blood that is transmitted from person to person by certain types of mosquitoes. Typically, individuals bitten by these mosquitoes begin experiencing symptoms between 9 and 14 days later. The symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms. If untreated, the disease can kill, especially in children under 5 and pregnant women.

Maternal and child health issues are intimately connected with malaria. In fact, 85% of the approximiate 881,000 malaria deaths are children under five. Additionally, malaria disproportionately affects pregnant women and can lead to other health complications for both of these vulnerable populations. Malaria kills and damages these groups and more must be done to protect them.
