Success Story #43

ethiopia.jpgSelam, is an Eritrean girl, who at the age of 7, walked to the border of Ethiopia in hopes of finding family members who might be in a refugee camp there.

The U.N. Refugee Agency found her and brought her to the Ma-Aini camp where she stayed along with 300 other unaccompanied and seperated youths.  Typically, such children are placed with women who will care for them, but this particular refugee camp is 80% male, many of whom are trying to avoid service in the Eritrean army.

Malaria is the largest killer of refugees in Africa and to address this, the U.N. Foundation has begun providing insecticide treated nets to refugees through the U.N. Refugee Agency in 15 different countries.

Now, Selam has a bednet to sleep under every night.  After making the courageous journey to the border of Ethiopia and the bravery to face life in a refugee camp, losing Selam to malaria would be heartbreaking, thankfully the U.N. Foundation has protected her.
