Conservatives Should Support Foreign Assistance Reform

The EarthMark Green posted recently on the Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network's blog on reasons why he believes conservatives in Congress should support efforts to reform the way the U.S. does foreign aid.

"Over the last four decades, our foreign aid programs have become fragmented across more than 20 different agencies and over 50 separate offices. This has led to an administrative maze where programs are administered by offices with overlapping jurisdictions, conflicting rules, and differing cultures. More importantly, it has given rise to a system where little comprehensive strategic planning is done. . . which means that our development professionals are often working without a clear sense of how program objectives and measurements are met."

Ray Chambers Addresses the World Health Assembly

Ray ChambersThe U.N, Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, addressed the World Health Assembly on May 18th.

Excerpted below;

"As you know, there has been tremendous progress, as recorded in WHO's most recent World presented last December here in Geneva. Thirty-eight countries have recorded Malaria Report declines in cases and deaths by over 50% since 2000; nine of these are in sub-Saharan Africa.

The ministers of health who have demonstrated such leadership in this fight are to be congratulated. Of course, this did not happen just because of activities since the Secretary-General's call. However, that call, and its immediate endorsement by the Chair of the African Union, led to a dramatic increase in funding available for malaria."

On Our Way To Tackle Malaria

lab Great news folks! According to an article on SciDev, "Scientists have discovered thousands of potential new drug compounds for tackling malaria." The article states that after screening about 310,000, Armand Guiguemde of St. Jude's Children's research Hospital and his team discovered more than 1,100 agents that may have successful anti-malarial effects. Another team from Spain which included Francisco-Javier Gamo of drug company GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Tres Cantos Medicines Development, screened nearly 2 million compounds from the company's library. Out of this significant amount of chemicals, the team identified some 13,500 anti-malarial compounds. "8000 of these worked well against multi drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites and about 11,000 were previously property of GSK."
