Malaria Action and Vision Awards

Emanuel and Ziemer Honored for Malaria Work

Malaria Vision and Malaria Action Awards Celebrated in Washington

Washington, D.C. - Ezekiel Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., and Admiral Tim Ziemer, USN (Ret.), were awarded the highest of honors in the malaria global health community for their work in fighting the disease. The Malaria Policy Center brought together lawmakers, humanitarian organizations, ambassadors, U.S. government officials and others at the 2010 Malaria Champions Breakfast to celebrate success in the global fight against malaria and outline the challenges that lay ahead.

"The Malaria Action and Vision Awards honor the exemplary leadership the world needs in order to win the fight against malaria." Mark Green, Managing Director of the Malaria Policy Center said.  "If we are going to put an end to malaria deaths by 2015, we will need the creative vision and ideas of people like Dr. Emanuel and Admiral Ziemer and their ability to put these ideas into action in the real world."

Dr. Emanuel received the Malaria Vision Award for his work as Special Advisor on Health Policy to the Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The Vision Award is given to a leader who serves as a strong voice for effective malaria policies. Dr. Emanuel's insights on how the global health arena should be shaped in the coming years will be instrumental to our success both against malaria and other diseases. Dr. Emanuel also serves as Chair of the Clinical Center Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health.

Admiral Ziemer received the Malaria Action Award for the tremendous leadership he has shown during his tenure as the head of the President's Malaria Initiative.  The Action Award is presented to a leader that translates policy into action and results. The President's Malaria Initiative continues to show incredible progress in the fight against malaria and Admiral Ziemer, as its coordinator, has played an invaluable role in that progress.

The Malaria Policy Center, a project of Malaria No More, works to raise awareness and galvanize support to address the global fight against malaria. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Center works with the global health community to engage policy leaders in the United States and in the other donor nations to advance efforts to defeat malaria worldwide.
