Managing Director Mark Green's Statement on the ALMA Working Session in Uganda

Statement Regarding Tanzanian President Kikwete's Election as African Leaders Malaria Alliance Chair

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)  Today, a number of African heads of state met at the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) working session held in conjunction with the African Union Summit being held in Kampala, Uganda.

I want to congratulate His Excellency, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of the United Republic of Tanzania, on being elected chairman of ALMA. President Kikwete continues to be recognized by his colleagues as a leader in the effort to coordinate the work toward ending malaria deaths in Africa. His efforts and that of other African leaders, are producing tangible and substantial results.

Joining President Kikwete, was the U.N. Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, who addressed the event by video conference.  Mr. Chambers has long been a champion for malaria efforts and with leaders like him and President Kikwete, I know the global community can defeat malaria.

Keeping the momentum toward ending malaria deaths by 2015 continues to be an ambitious, yet realistic goal.  This election helps provide the leadership and vision that is needed to reach the goal of achieving the first great humanitarian victory of the century.

We look forward to continuing to work alongside leaders like President Kikwete, and Mr. Chambers as well as organizations like ALMA.
