Senate Lawmakers Support End to Malaria Deaths
US Senate Passes Resolution in Support of World Malaria Day
Washington, D.C.- The United States Senate passed a resolution supporting increased awareness of malaria and an end to deaths caused by the disease in commemoration of World Malaria Day. Malaria No More thanks the Senate and the "Malaria Champions" that introduced the resolution.
"In passing this resolution, the Senate has demonstrated the type of strong, committed leadership that is necessary to defeat malaria." Said Mark Green, Managing Director of Malaria No More's Policy Center. "This generation of leaders has the opportunity to be the generation that scored the first great humanitarian victory of this century, an end to malaria deaths."
The resolution supported the goals and ideals of World Malaria Day, and reaffirmed United States leadership in efforts to combat malaria as a critical component of the President's Global Health Initiative.
U.S. support for malaria programs is absolutely critical," said Scott Case, CEO of Malaria No More. "The rest of the world will to look to the United States in order to make decisions about their own support of malaria control. With this resolution, the Senate has shown that the United States will continue to lead the global effort to end malaria deaths."
The resolution was introduced by Sen. Feingold of Wisconsin. Co-Sponsors included; Sen. Sherrod Brown, Sen. Wicker, Sen. Arlen Spector, Sen. Benjamin Cardin, Sen. Richard Durbin, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. James Inhofe, Sen. Tim Johnson, Sen. Ricard Lugar, and Sen. Bernard Sanders.
